Ngau Chi Wan is one of Kowloon’s 13 rural villages - collectively known as “Shap Sam Heung”- situated along a mountain stream and was inhabited over 200 years ago. Today, Ngau Chi Wan is Hong Kong’s last “urban indigenous village” whose look and feel is distinctive different from its surroundings. Across the busy road from Ngau Chi Wan is the famous rainbow-coloured Choi Hung housing estate, which is Hong Kong’s first low-cost housing conceived as a permanent home for less-affordable locals. Its classic flat-shaped buildings decked with old-fashioned stores are a testament to the grassroot lifestyle and the development of housing policy after the war.
