【Multi-Shades of Hong Kong

Community Social Innovation Lab @ Yau Tsim Mong

We may not share the same skin colour, we may not speak the same language, but we all see Hong Kong as our home. Wouldn’t that be weird if we say ‘HongKongers stand as one’ while accidentally treating the non-Chinese communities as “outsiders”?

How might we make Yau Tsim Mong, where we see strong bondings among neighbourhoods, to become more culturally inclusive? How might we foster the sense of belonging of non-Chinese population towards the community?

We proudly present to youMulti-Shades of Hong Kong】Community Social Innovation Lab @ Yau Tsim Mong, an 8-week incubation programme to promote multicultural inclusion. It is hoped that participants from multifarious cultural backgrounds can walk hand in hand, build empathy with one another, and develop deeper understanding about the Yau Tsim Mong community through the application of ‘Design Thinking’.

We cordially invite you, who are passionate about the local community and of different cultural backgrounds, to join us on this social innovation journey! Renowned cross-sector thought-leaders and representatives from multicultural communities will gather to bring our participants into the world of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. Participants will also learn and apply Design Thinking as a human-centred approach to develop ideas and solutions in response to the needs of multicultural communities, creating a positive social change for Yau Tsim Mong.

In the programme’s 2-day Design Thinking workshops, in addition to inspirational sharing from our guest speakers, participants will visit the streets and alleys of Yau Tsim Mong and engage with non-Chinese kai-fongs to understand their lives and challenges. Participants will identify pain-points in the community, examine the causes and work in teams to develop actionable solutions that address them. After the workshops, each team will have the chance of getting a small seed fund of $1,500 to put the ideas into action with the support and guidance from seasoned social innovation practitioners.

Programme Highlights

  • Co-create social innovation projects with participants from multicultural backgrounds
  • Learn and adopt Design Thinking to discover and develop novel solutions to foster multicultural inclusion in Yau Tsim Mong
  • Tour around the Yau Tsim Mong community, exchange views with non-Chinese kai-fongs and understand more about their livelihoods
  • Have the opportunity to gain a small seed fund ($1,500 per team) to kick-start and test out the ideas over a 6-week implementation period
  • Receive coaching from seasoned social innovation practitioners at Good Lab
